Amy Tobey is a queer faith leader and doctoral student at Garrett-Evangelical Theological Seminary, where she is pursuing a PhD in Pastoral Theology, Personality and Culture, on the Clinical Psychology track. At PSR, she earned a Certificate in Sexuality and Religion, an MA in Social Transformation, and an MDiv in the Congregational Track.
Amy’s ministry includes holding space for LGBTQIA+ people at a monthly LGBTea gathering, preaching and creating liturgy for congregations in the Central Pacific Conference of the United Church of Christ, helping with the youth group at Bethel Beaverton, and cooking for Faith Cafe. In 2025, she interned at First Congregational UCC in Salem, Oregon, where she preached, created liturgy, organized a pop-up clothing closet for trans people during Pride in the Park, surveyed the neighborhood about community needs, and participated in council meetings.
Amy’s doctoral work explores how mysticism, story work, and horror graphic novels can support post-traumatic growth and resilience among people who have experienced religious trauma. She hopes to create resources for the United Church of Christ and, eventually, other denominations. A queer woman of Mexican American and European heritage, Amy says PSR helped her reclaim her Mexican American roots and became her theological home. As a member of the Alumnx Council, she hopes to stay connected with fellow alumnx and support the work of ministry across the community. She believes PSR alumnx are called to “do justly, love mercy, and walk humbly with God”—and to keep doing that work together.
