This intensive course, taught by Dr. Leonard McMahon, introduces students to the core principles and perspectives of Liberation Theology. Liberation Theology is a theological movement that seeks to address issues of social justice, oppression, and inequality through the lens of Christian faith. Participants will explore the historical development, key thinkers, and practical applications of Liberation Theology in various contexts. This course aims to equip students with a deeper understanding of how theology can be a tool for societal transformation and liberation.
Dr. Leonard McMahon is Assistant Professor of Pastoral Care, Spirituality, and Political Theology at PSR. He has a doctorate from the Graduate Theological Union at UC Berkeley, on spirituality, theology, and political theory, an MA in Religious Studies from UC Santa Barbara and an MDiv from Harvard Divinity School.
With his interest in improving the common good through political theology, spirituality, and pastoral care, Leonard works through his consultancy, Common Ground Dialogue, to bring divergent citizens into deeper conversation for the sake of our democracy. He is deeply concerned about political polarization and draws upon classical spirituality and modern political theory to craft a pastoral approach that attends to both the macrosocial and microsocial aspects of our common life.
