As the first generation of openly queer Jews becomes our elders, younger queer Jews are continuing the labor of organizing, advocating and building lives and community.
Join us as a panel of clergy representing three generations reflect together on the challenges and changes that have shaped queer Jewish identity, community and leadership “mi dor l’dor – from generation to generation.”
Rabbi Megan Doherty has served as the Senior Educator at HIAS and as a campus rabbi at Oberlin College and Yale University. She has served on the board and executive committee of the Reconstructionist Rabbinical Association, and was founding co-chair of the Reconstructionist Movement’s Joint Israel Commission. She has completed fellowships and training with the Institute for Jewish Spirituality, the Mandel Institute, and the Shalom Hartman Institute. Rabbi Doherty lives in Ohio with her partner, their daughter, and their dog.
Avi Rose is a long-time nonprofit leader and community activist. In 1989, he co-edited the anthology Twice Blessed: On Being Lesbian or Gay and Jewish. He also played a pioneering role in promoting a compassionate and serious response to HIV/AIDS in the Jewish and interfaith communities. Avi is a long-time member and spiritual leader at Kehilla Community Synagogue in Berkeley, California.
Rabbi Ariel Tovlev (he/they) is a poet, public speaker, and educator who has taught across the United States on gender beyond the binary in Judaism. His original liturgy has been published in Mishkan Ga’avah: Where Pride Dwells and he is currently writing a trans theology.
