CLGS Welcomes Rev. Terence L. Mayo as Coordinator of the African American Roundtable

The Center for LGBTQ and Gender Studies in Religion (CLGS) at Pacific School of Religion (PSR) is proud to announce the appointment of Rev. Terence L. Mayo (he/they) as the new Coordinator of the African American Roundtable (AART). This vital Roundtable, which has been integral to CLGS since its founding in 2000, focuses on addressing issues of faith, race, and LGBTQ+ inclusion within African American communities.

“Rev. Mayo’s extensive experience in theology, advocacy, and education makes him an exceptional addition to the CLGS team,” said Dr. Bernard Schlager, CLGS Executive Director. “His leadership will undoubtedly bring transformative energy to the African American Roundtable, and we are thrilled to welcome him to the PSR community.”

Rev. Mayo is a Black queer feminist practical theologian, critical educator, and LGBTQIA+ youth advocate. His work bridges theology, racial equity, and social justice through contextual education and community-based strategies. As a Steinhardt Fellow at New York University pursuing a Ph.D. in Teaching and Learning, Rev. Mayo combines academic rigor with grassroots activism.

A sought-after speaker, he has presented nationally on topics such as diversity, equity, and inclusion (DEI), public theology, and trauma-informed strategies. He also serves on the boards of Progressive Youth Ministry and the Howard University School of Divinity Alumni Association. Rev. Mayo’s interdisciplinary background includes degrees in Business, Secondary Education, and Religion.

Reflecting on his new role, Rev. Mayo stated: “I am excited to join the CLGS team and lead the African American Roundtable in its critical work at the intersections of faith, race, and LGBTQIA+ advocacy. Together, we will continue creating spaces for transformative dialogue and action.”

The African American Roundtable is one of six CLGS Roundtables that aim to foster intersectional advocacy, research, and education to advance the well-being of LGBTQIA+ individuals and communities of faith.
