Ordained in the Evangelical Lutheran Church in America in July 2017, I am committed to equity and justice, including in the smallest faith communities. From January 2017 to August 2022, I served my first call at Henrytown and Union Prairie Lutheran Churches in rural Lanesboro, Minnesota. I then accepted a three-year interim call to the Episcopal Church of the Incarnation in Ann Arbor, Michigan, where I served from 2022 to 2025. In July 2025, I joined the Bishop’s staff of the Diocese of Michigan in the newly created role of Missioner for Rural and Small Congregation Vitality.
I recently contracted with Minneapolis-based Fortress Press to write my first book, based on my Pacific School of Religion Doctor of Ministry dissertation. Titled In the Middle of Everywhere: A Queer Love Letter to the Rural Church, it is scheduled for release in autumn 2027.
Pacific School of Religion served as a catalyst for important questions in my life: How do we build healthy, flourishing communities, particularly in remote and rural places? How do we uplift marginalized queer voices amid harmful expectations around gender and sexuality? As an ordained gay man serving in regional church leadership with Bishop Bonnie Perry, I see PSR’s ability to inspire bold questions and acts of resistance in the service of well-being and becoming. During my time on the Alumnx Council, I would seek to foster that same spirit among alumnx across the country—encouraging bold action and strengthening relationships between alumnx and the school that formed and sent us into the world.
My work on equity, diversity, and inclusion has included serving as a Minnesota Rural Clergy Fellow through the Collegeville Institute in St. Joseph, Minnesota; serving on the statewide board of Inclusive Justice–Michigan and the Interfaith Roundtable of Washtenaw County; and participating in End Gun Violence–Michigan events. In my parish work, I seek to find the Divine in the voices and perspectives of those most marginalized and oppressed. I believe God calls us to overturn the tables of injustice and hatred as we work to build a more beloved and flourishing community.
