Pacific School of Religion’s Dr. Joshua S. Bartholomew will present at the Black Panther Party 60th Anniversary Conference in Oakland, California, with a lecture exploring the connections between Black theology, the Black Panther Party, and economic liberation.
Drawing from his 2023 book Black Theology and the Black Panthers and previewing his forthcoming work on Chairman Fred Hampton, Bartholomew will examine the Black Panther Party’s survival programs as models of economic self-determination. These programs, including free breakfast programs, health clinics, liberation schools, food distribution, cooperative housing, and legal aid, offered practical approaches to community care and economic liberation.
The lecture will consider how this often-overlooked dimension of the Party’s legacy can deepen contemporary conversations about Black theology, Black religion, Black consciousness, and movements for economic justice.
Dr. Bartholomew’s presentation is scheduled for Friday, October 16, 2026 | 1:15–2:15 p.m.
