Preparing theologically and spiritually rooted leaders for social transformation

At the intersection of two rapidly changing institutions — the church and higher education — seminaries are grappling with the meaning of theological education in the 21st century. As young people increasingly identify as “unchurched” and small liberal arts colleges shutter, are seminaries relevant? At Pacific School of Religion, we know the answer is a resounding “yes.”

For the past 150 years, Pacific School of Religion has crafted theological education that responds to the world’s most urgent needs. From speaking out against Japanese-American internment in the 1940s to proclaiming that Black Lives Matter today, our students and alumni/ae bear prophetic witness in the face of injustice. Pacific School of Religion challenges the minds and nurtures the spirits of leaders who transform the world.

Your gift allows students to apply a critical, theological lens to pressing social concerns. Your generosity will impact not only our students, but the lives they touch through ministry, community-building, and social transformation.

Living a Radically Welcoming Gospel

Whether ministering to the local homeless community or participating in our MultiFaith Transgender Summit, PSR students embody a message of radical inclusivity. Our two centers, Ignite Institute @ PSR and Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry, share an expansive, hopeful message of spiritual and social transformation.

We are committed to creating a learning and teaching community that reflects the variety of our context and the beauty of God’s people.

A Global Community

From atop “Holy Hill” in Berkeley, California, Pacific School of Religion is steeped in the history, community, and culture of the San Francisco Bay Area. As a founding member of the Graduate Theological Union, PSR offers our students unparalleled access to a divinity school consortium—and an unparalleled interfaith conversation.

Additionally, off-campus immersive experiences offer students a uniquely global perspective. Whether working alongside displaced farmworkers in Colombia or wrestling with issues of religious identity in the Holy Land, PSR students learn, first hand, how to best support local communities working for justice. Within this global context, our students learn to engage an increasingly interconnected world.

Because of tax provisions that encourage charitable giving, however, there are many other ways of giving that you might not have thought of before — ways that allow you to make a larger gift than you had thought possible, or make a gift with assets that you might not have realized were available to you.
