With deep sorrow and abiding gratitude, Pacific School of Religion announces the passing of Rev. Dr. Joseph D. Driskill, Emeritus Professor of Spirituality, esteemed colleague, and cherished member of the PSR community. A gifted teacher, contemplative scholar, and devoted minister, Joe touched countless lives with his gentle wisdom, deep faith, and unwavering commitment to justice-rooted spiritual formation. His legacy lives on in the lives of his students, the communities he served, and the many who were shaped by his presence at PSR.
During his years on faculty, Rev. Dr. Driskill served as Professor of Spirituality and Dean of the Disciples Seminary Foundation at PSR’s Berkeley campus. His important work continues in the central role spirituality plays in PSR’s leadership formation as well as our deep commitment as a partner school of the Disciples Seminary Foundation. Dr. Driskill led students in exploring Protestant spiritualities, contemplative prayer, Disciples history, and the role of spirituality in pastoral care. An ordained minister in the Christian Church (Disciples of Christ), he pastored churches in Missouri, Kentucky, and Saskatchewan, and spent 12 years in campus ministry at the University of Western Ontario, serving the United Church of Canada in London, Ontario.
A widely respected author and teacher, Dr. Driskill’s publications include Protestant Spiritual Exercises: Theology, History, and Practice, Spiritually Informed Pastoral Care, and Ethics and Spiritual Care: A Guide for Pastors, Chaplains, and Spiritual Directors, co-authored with PSR Emerita Karen Lebacqz. These works continue to shape the fields of spirituality, ethics, and pastoral care in seminaries and ministry contexts across North America.
Rev. Dr. Driskill remained very active in his retirement both within the Disciples community as well as in his support of PSR. He served as a mentor and thought partner to many, and a faithful supporter of the school’s mission. Most recently, he published A Remarkable Life: The Journey of Alice Porter, Medical Missionary, reflecting his continued passion for lifting up lives of courage and service shaped by faith.
“Joe was not only a remarkable scholar and teacher, he also graciously offered his counsel and friendship,” said PSR President Rev. Dr. David Vásquez-Levy. “His impact in our PSR community and the broader church—through his teaching, his ministry, and his continued support—has been a gift. I am personally grateful for his steady encouragement and insight over the years. He modeled a life of faithful leadership, quiet courage, and deep compassion.”
We hold Leslie and Joe’s family, loved ones, and all who mourn his passing in our prayers. Memorial details and opportunities to honor his legacy will be shared as they become available.
