Pacific School of Religion is pleased to announce the appointment of Dr. Ish Ruiz as Co-Director of PSR’s Doctor of Ministry (DMin) Program. Dr. Ruiz will serve alongside Dr. Jim Lawrence during the 2026–2027 academic year in a period of shared leadership and thoughtful transition, ensuring the continued strength and future growth of one of PSR’s most impactful academic programs.
For more than a decade, under Lawrence’s leadership, the Doctor of Ministry program has grown more than threefold, becoming a vibrant community of scholar-practitioners serving congregations, communities, and ministries across the country. His vision, dedication, and commitment to students have helped shape a program recognized for its academic excellence, practical engagement, and innovative approach to ministry.
As Lawrence begins transitioning toward retirement over the coming academic year, he will gradually shift his focus to long-standing passions, including publications and his leadership within the Swedenborgian community. While stepping back from day-to-day leadership, he will continue supporting the Doctor of Ministry program through student advising and by assisting with the publication and dissemination of doctoral projects.
“I am deeply grateful for Jim’s exceptional leadership and the lasting impact he has had on hundreds of students and the broader ministry landscape,” said PSR President Rev. Dr. David Vásquez-Levy. “His work has helped build a program that embodies PSR’s commitment to preparing leaders for faithful, transformative ministry.”
Ruiz brings significant experience and momentum to his new role. Over the past two years, he has worked closely with Lawrence on a comprehensive review of the Doctor of Ministry program while also advising students and contributing to ongoing program development. Through this collaborative work, he has gained a deep understanding of the program’s strengths and future opportunities while cultivating strong relationships with students and faculty.
“The year ahead allows Jim and Ish to co-lead the program, ensuring a thoughtful transition while continuing the momentum that has made the DMin such a vital part of PSR’s mission,” Vásquez-Levy said.
Together, Lawrence and Ruiz will continue supporting current students, advancing curriculum development, and strengthening the program’s role in preparing ministry leaders equipped to navigate the challenges and opportunities of an evolving world.
The Doctor of Ministry program remains central to PSR’s commitment to lifelong learning and the formation of leaders who serve with wisdom, creativity, and justice. This season of shared leadership reflects both the program’s strong foundation and its promising future.
Please join Pacific School of Religion in congratulating Dr. Ish Ruiz on his appointment as Co-Director and in expressing gratitude to Dr. Jim Lawrence for his years of visionary leadership and enduring service to the DMin program.
