The celebration of the Posadas is a traditional Latinx ritual that commemorates the biblical story of Mary and Joseph looking for a place to stay in Bethlehem to give birth to baby Jesus. After being told that there is “no room at the inn” in various places, one location offers them shelter in a barn, where Christ is born and laid to rest in a manger. This story represents a yearning for hospitality, belonging, and justice – which are central values of both Latinx and queer culture.
In this CLGS Latinx Roundtable prayer service, we will celebrate the queer version of the Posadas and reflect on how – as a community – we can better recognize and welcome Christ present in all persons, including LGBTQ+ ones.
