Visiting scholar Salomonson screens documentary
PSR visiting scholar Jone Salomonson, who is professor of feminist theology, gender and religion at University of Oslo, Norway, will show her documentary "UMEMULO: Animal Sacrifice, Human Rights, and AIDS in South Africa" on Tuesday, May 12 at 6pm in PSR 6 (below the Chapel of the Great Commission).
The film documents how South African township women of plural religious commitments take leadership in the name of Jesus and their Zulu ancestors in trying to protect their daughters from dying from AIDS. In this film we see how a family and their extended kingroup adapt an old rite of passage for girls in order to protect a contemporary 16 year old from being infected, and how they alternatively celebrate life and community.
This event is free and open to the public.
