Riess Potterveld installed as 11th president of PSR
The installation of Riess Potterveld as the 11th president of Pacific School of Religion took place on Tuesday, January 25, 2011 in an evensong service on Holy Hill.
Potterveld returns to PSR after serving as president of Lancaster Theological Seminary in Pennsylvania for eight years. He served at PSR from 1993 to 2002 as vice president for institutional advancement and acting dean. In addition to being a popular member of the PSR community and a respected scholar, his efforts as vice president resulted in the launch of a successful capital campaign and a significant increase in donors. He also spearheaded the creation of a new endowment for field education stipends and a new program in congregational leadership.
The evensong, a simple service of worship through music and prayer, began with an academic procession at 5:15 pm in the Chapel of the Great Commission on the PSR campus (1798 Scenic Ave., Berkeley). Clergy, trustees, faculty, students, representatives of church, ecumenical, and interfaith partners, and members of the Graduate Theological Union (GTU) and Bay Area communities formally charged the new president with his duties.
At the reception following the service, at 6:00 pm in Easton Hall (2401 Ridge Road, Berkeley, across from the PSR campus), newly installed President Potterveld made his public debut performing on cello, accompanied by an unprecedented convergence of cello talent from the GTU community, including Rebecca Parker, president of Starr King School for the Ministry, PSR distinguished alumna Roberta Rominger, PSR Housing Coordinator Marge Boyd, and Zealin Glickrieman, eight-year-old son of Jen Gall, executive assistant to the president.
The service and reception took place during PSR's annual Earl Lectures and Leadership Conference, a three-day event that featured UC Berkeley professor Robert Reich as keynote speaker earlier in the day on January 25. The Earl Lectures, now in their 110th year, are free and open to the public.
