April 22, 2009

Rabbi Michael Lerner has been scheduled as PSR’s commencement speaker for 2009. A Berkeley resident, Lerner is rabbi of Beyt Tikkun, a progressive synagogue in San Francisco, and editor of Tikkun magazine, a bimonthly Jewish critique of politics, culture and society. A veteran of nonviolent movements in the 60’s, including the Berkeley Free Speech movement and the civil rights movement, Lerner has been instrumental in forming a progressive approach to working toward peace in the Israel/Palestine conflict.

A graduate of UC Berkeley with a PhD in philosophy, he has written several influential books, including: The Politics of Meaning (1996); Healing Israel/Palestine (2003); and The Left Hand of God: Taking Back our Country from the Religious Right (2006). He has been active in forming the Network of Spiritual Progressives, a movement of liberal religious voices concerned about social and political issues.

PSR's commencement will be held May 24, 2009 at the First Congregational Church of Oakland (2501 Harrison St., Oakland, CA 94612, 510/444-8511). Seating is limited to graduates and their ticket-holding guests only.
