New Certificate of Swedenborgian Theology launched

October 14, 2009

The Swedenborgian House of Studies, an affiliate of Pacific School of Religion, announces a new certificate, the Certificate of Swedenborgian Theology. The newly accredited program is the first at PSR to allow distance-learning students to complete their certification almost entirely off-campus.

The required courses will provide the necessary instruction to students seeking ordination in the Swedenborgian Church as well as a comprehensive guide of Swedenborgian scholarship to master of arts students, master of theological studies students, and laypersons.

“With this approach, we can turn any bricks-and-mortar course into a distance-learning class, allowing us to reach a wider community of students,” says the Rev. Dr. Jim Lawrence, dean of the Swedenborgian House of Studies. “Distance and flex programs are proliferating nationwide, and this new certificate puts us at the technological and theological forefront of the trend.”

The new approach, which includes videoconferencing and intensive courses, extends the opportunity to study Swedenborgian theology to those who cannot attend classes on the PSR campus. Real-time videoconferencing provides the interaction, discussion, and community needed for a theological education, and the weeklong and two-week intensive courses provide an arena for indepth study at a common location. The revamped certificate replaces the Certificate of Swedenborgian Studies.
