Jakada Imani Named Director of New Center
Before coming to PSR as a Changemaker Fellow, Jakada Imani served as Executive Director of the Ella Baker Center for Human Rights for 5 years, after taking over from the center’s founder Van Jones. Imani led the Center to help pass the Green Jobs Act, a piece of federal legislation, and four successful state-wide ballot measure campaigns. He also launched the Ella Baker Center’s newest ef- fort, a program to reduce the US incarceration rate by 50 percent in ten years.
Before joining Ella Baker Center staff, Imani helped launch or lead a number of important Bay Area organizations, including Rising Youth for Social Equality (RYSE) and Underground Railroad (an artist collective). Imani has served on a number of boards including the West Oakland Community Development Planning Board, KPFA Radio Station, and Underground Railroad.
“My calling is to minister God’s word, based in a theology rooted in liberation, to help people and social movements achieve personal and social transformation,” Imani said.
