Incoming Merit Scholar receives FTE Award

May 27, 2009

Staci Imes, incoming PSR Merit Scholar in Fall 2009, has been awarded a Congregational Fellowship by the Fund for Theological Education (FTE). Imes was nominated by her congregation, Wauwatosa Presbyterian Church in Wauwatosa, WI, and then selected by the FTE from a competitive pool of applicants from the U.S. and Canada. FTE Congregational Fellows must be be preparing for congregational or parish ministry, have a minimum grade point average of 3.0, and have intellectual and interpersonal gifts for pastoral leadership. As part of the fellowship, Imes will receive a monetary award to be used for tuition and living expenses. She will also be attending the 2009 FTE Conference on Excellence in Ministry, which will be held at Virginia Theological Seminary in Alexandria, VA, June 17-21.

FTE fellowships are funded by Lilly Endowment to increase the number of highly capable young people exploring or preparing for ordained ministry as a profession. Fewer than seven percent of clergy in most denominations today are under age 35, and interest among seminary students in congregational ministry has declined over the past five years.
