Earl Lectures at PSR
The 2011 Earl Lectures at Pacific School of Religion, Our Daily Bread: Faith, Work, and the Economy, will take place Tuesday-Thursday, January 25-27 at the Pacific School of Religion campus at 1798 Scenic Avenue in Berkeley.
The keynote speaker will be Robert Reich, professor of public policy at the University of California, Berkeley.
Other presenters include Kim Bobo, executive director of Interfaith Worker Justice (IWJ), a non-profit organization based in Chicago; Islamic scholar Shaykh Hamza Yusuf, co-founder of Zaytuna College in Berkeley; Bishop Yvette Flunder, founder and senior pastor of City of Refuge United Church of Christ in San Francisco; and Alexia Salvatierra, executive director of Clergy and Laity United for Economic Justice (CLUE).
Panels will include "Faith and Funding" with Yvette Flunder, Bill Glenn, and Roland Stringfellow, and "Work and Economic Justice across Faith: Christian, Jewish, and Muslim Perspectives" with Marion Grau, Rachel Biale, and Ameena Jandali.
Workshops will include such diverse presentations as: “The Word on the Street: Offering Radical Hospitality to the Homeless”; “The Redemptive Power of Microfinance”; “Exploring a Theology and Household Practices of Sabbath Economics”; and “Sermons to Soundbytes.”
In addition to lectures and workshops, the Earl Lectures offer opportunities to enjoy worship services, performances, luncheons and dinners.
Each January, PSR hosts the annual Earl Lectures and Leadership Conference, a three-day event that addresses critical theological, pastoral, and social issues of the day. The lectures were established in 1901 to bring prominent religious leaders to Berkeley's university community, and have featured such international figures as Theodore Roosevelt, Elie Wiesel, Howard Thurman, Maya Angelou, Paul Tillich, and Alice Walker.
