Sycamore Congregational Church UCC

Sycamore Church was founded by Japanese students in 1904 and has continued to serve not only new Japanese immigrants but people of a wide range of ethnicities, abilities, and theological perspectives for 111 years. In 2014 we joyfully celebrated our 110th anniversary! We typically have 20-25 in the Japanese language service and 40-45 in the English language service, but up to 110 in our bilingual services (10 per year). While Sycamore is not officially an Open and Affirming church, we  have been blessed to have a number of LGBTQ members, friends, and MITs; and we have served at vigils for peace and immigration rights. Sycamore has a fully integrated Japanese language Preschool and a number of the parents participate in the bilingual services.

This academic year Sycamore will be a particularly interesting Field Ed site, as our new Japanese language minister both integrates into our culture and traditions and brings new energy to our congregation. Additionally, we have begun a series of strategic discussions about a number of areas of our ministries. Rev. Omi has served at Sycamore since 2012 and is a member of the 52-person United Church Board, continuing a tradition of close ties to the National Setting of the United Church of Christ and, as a former Sycamore MIT, is committed to fostering MIT development. The MIT can expect to be an active participant in worship, including preaching every several weeks (if desired), assisting with Holy Communion, participating in church meetings, calling on members (typically in spring semester, if desired), and community events, including our Annual Bazaar, which attracts 1500+ people, Rummage Sale, and other events.
