Hillcrest Congregational Church, UCC

Field Placement with Special Emphasis on our Social Ministry populations and programs

We are an open and affirming Congregation of 240 in central Contra Costa County, approximately 15 miles from Berkeley, in our seventh decade of ministry. We have a history of 'cutting edge' programming in our area: on-campus social ministry, begun in the 1950's, has doubled its capacity in the last 5 years; interfaith work and collaboration; a practicing zendo on campus, in a city with no houses of worship other than Christian; an "Eldering Ministry" program which promotes and supports the creative aging process of sage-ing. We are ever interested in new and effective ways to meet the spiritual and social needs of our community.

We are seeking a Minister in Training who has strong interest not only in engaging in the worship life and mission of our congregation but also in engaging the non-church and neighboring communities as they access our church's social outreach programs. Our outreach programs include fully volunteer-run (by members and friends of Hillcrest) social service ministries: our community food pantry and clothing room (both of which are open M-W-F mornings), as well as a layette program (distributed through County social workers). Last year our programs served well over 2,000 people, most of whom came to our campus and many of whom speak primarily Spanish. Our outreach programs also include an established Facebook page, as well as lay-led discussion regarding other social media.

The Minister in Training we seek will engage and connect with those who come to utilize our social service ministry programs and will work to enhance contact through social media. Particular responsibilities will include direct engagement with program recipients through conversation, informal counseling, and/or educational programs to address spiritual, social and community needs. The MIT will also make use of social media to present our programs and message to the broader community.

The scope of responsibilities and expectations will be determined by the MIT and our Senior Minister based on the particular interest/skills of applicant and the requirements of PSR. Conversational Spanish is a must, as is availability on at least one weekday morning/week, and familiarity with social media.

Monthly Stipend: $500+
Car required?: Yes
(Highly recommended, as Hillcrest's location is NOT convenient to the Pleasant Hill Bart Station. That said, most of the in-person activity is on-campus.)
