Youth Spirit Artworks- Program Coordinator
Position Description: Youth Spirit Artworks is looking for a coordinator to facilitate development of program activities and resources for our East Bay urban arts job training program empowering homeless and low-income youth.
Qualifications: 3+ years leadership experience organizing and setting up new or expanding programs;Ability to use initiative and creatively gather resources;M.A. in education or a related area a plus;Experience with curriculum development a plus;Experience engaging, inspiring and managing volunteers required;Detail oriented with strong follow through abilities;Punctual, responsible, and dependable;Enthusiastic and hard working;2+ years experience working with diverse ethnic/racial populations in an urban setting and strong cultural competency;Experience working with homeless/at risk youth a plus;Strong leadership abilities connecting with and organizing young people;Experience with and commitment to using the Youth Development Model a plus;Interest in working in an interfaith-spiritual context with members of the interfaith religious community—M. Div. training a plus;Ability to be flexible with a new and growing program;Willingness and ability to facilitate/oversee collection of program data, maintenance of program records;Bi-lingual Spanish speaking or working knowledge of Spanish a plus;
Responsibilities: Facilitate daily youth arts furniture painting/urban arts training sessions (4 hours per day, 5 days per week in summer, and 3 hours per day, 5 days per week in fall and winter/spring);Organize weekly trainings on diverse subjects pertaining to youth development;Work with staff in developing and strengthening core program curriculum;Facilitate development of regular Youth Empowerment Group meetings;Facilitate development of regular critiques with youth artists;Work with staff and youth in setting and fulfilling individual youth goals and objectives;Carry out regular weekly outreach to local agencies referring youth to our program and maintain relationships with referral agency staff people;Seek out program volunteers and other program resources strengthening and expanding YSA arts program;Facilitate recording program data and maintaining program records in conjunction with staff;Coordinate with staff in accepting donations of program supplies and furniture;Participate in staff meetings and other program activities as time permits.
Youth Spirit Artworks is a new interfaith youth art jobs organization based in South Berkeley. We are involved in arts furniture painting and other arts ventures with homeless, formerly homeless and low-income youth, ages 16 to 25. West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project - Community Organizer
The West Oakland Environmental Indicators Project, a community-based non-profit education and advocacy organization has an immediate opening for an experienced Community Organizer.
The campaign goals of the WOEIP are:reducing health risks to West Oakland residents associated with the movement of goods to and from the Port of Oakland, seeking to move polluting trucks and truck related businesses out of West Oakland residential neighborhoods and to identify and reclaim contaminated lands for the benefit of the community.
ROLE
The role of the community organizer position is to educate, organize, nurture and sustain a movement to empower and develop leadership among West Oakland residents impacted by polluted air and contaminated land. We seek an organizer with 2-3 years experience, who is ready to take on responsibility for organizing residents and building the membership for the WOEIP.

The WOEIP Community Organizer will:
1. Conduct outreach and education to West Oakland residents on air quality and land-use issues, using door-to-door direct contact and presentations to community and faith-base organizations.
2. Build EIP membership using person-to-person relationship- building, and other creative methods of engagement, to recruit and train residents to become active participants in our air quality and land use campaigns.
3. Empower residents through advocacy and leadership training targeting the negative impacts of freight transport and land use on West Oakland neighborhoods.
4. Support a core member group to lead work groups and campaign activities.
5. Maintain records and prepare reports related to program work
For this job you’ll need great communications skills, and 2-3 years experience in grassroots organizing with diverse ethnic groups, including outreach and leadership development. You need a BA or tech degree plus formal training in community organizing or equivalent experience developing and leading community-based campaigns. Conversational Spanish is a big plus.
Salary is $35,000/year, plus health plan, paid vacation & sick leave.

People's Grocery Executive Director
People's Grocery is a community-based organization, founded in 2003, that addresses health disparities in the community of West Oakland stemming from a lack of access to and knowledge of healthy, fresh foods. People's Grocery's mission is to build a local food system that can improve the health and economy of the West Oakland community. POSITION DESCRIPTION
As People's Grocery progresses towards its greatest goal - a community grocery store in West Oakland – we are preparing for the eventual transition of our founding Executive Director as he turns his full-time focus to developing the retail business and becoming a member of its management team. Central to this transition will be the hiring of a new leader aligned with the mission, vision and values of People's Grocery who is capable of leading the organization into an exciting and productive future. The new Executive Director will receive training and mentorship from the current Executive Director, as well as assistance in establishing relationships with the organization's staff, clientele, partners and funders prior to the current Executive Director's departure. The current Executive Director will then assume an interim role on staff as "Enterprise Project Specialist". We are seeking an experienced, enthusiastic leader who wants to be part of a committed and talented team dedicated to advancing food justice and creating positive change for youth and families in the West Oakland community through education, youth development and urban agriculture programs. The Executive Director will work closely with the current Executive Director and the Board of Directors and management team to provide leadership to People's Grocery's organizational development, strategic goals and growth strategy, as well as manage a range of staff, development, outreach and board related responsibilities.
QUALIFICATIONS
Minimum of three (3) years nonprofit management and administrative experience. Bachelor's Degree required. Minimum two (2) years experience in budgeting and fiscal operations/analysis. Experience with and knowledge of program evaluation, research methods, data assessment systems. Excellent organizational and planning skills; team player and a self starter.Excellent written, oral communication, networking, negotiation (conflict management and resolution), and presentation skills.Ability to work on advisory committees, task forces, and external coalitions, and take on effective leadership roles.Excellent office management and computer literacy (IT) skills (including MS Office applications, FileMaker Pro database, internet research).Bilingual or bicultural skills desirable, but not required.Ability to work well with diverse groups, sensitivity to issues of race, class, and gender within the workplace and in the community at large.
Compensation depends on experience and qualification, but will include benefits (health, dental, and vision coverage) and 5 weeks paid vacation plus national holidays.

The Multicultural Institute - Mentoring For Academic Success (MAS) Tutor
MAS provides tutoring/mentoring services for underserved 4th-12th grade students. Tutors work 4-12 hours/week.
Position Description:
The MAS tutor believes in helping students reach their potential and become life-long learners. The MAS tutor commits to providing tutoring/mentoring for students within the Berkeley Unified School District for one year (two academic semesters). The tutor relies on her/his own academic skills, generosity of spirit, and good humor to assist students with academic assignments, serve as role models, and broadly promote academic and social success. Understanding that strong reading skills help students in all academic disciplines, the MAS tutor primarily concentrates on helping students develop literacy. As academic assignments warrant, tutors also provide assistance with mathematics, science, social studies, and fine arts. Being fluent in Spanish is advantageous. Program times vary among sites, but all are between the hours of 2:15 and 5:00 p.m., Monday through Thursday, mid-September to mid-May.
Responsibilities include: Assist students with homework, projects, test-preparation, and other subject related issues;Explore with students difficult concepts and share new approaches to understanding them; Focus on specific, teacher-and parent-supported goals;Participate in site-specific activities with students;Serve as a role model and resource to students in areas beyond the realm of tutoring.Including, attending initial screening, orientation session, and scheduled meetings; Communicating regularly with Site Coordinator for support and additional resources.
Work Study eligibility required. Volunteer, internship, and field education positions also available. New tutors must provide verification of TB-negative status and submit fingerprints for a California Department of Justice background check.
