Faculty Positions

Faculty in Arts and Religion

This interdisciplinary position provides intellectual leadership in the field of arts and religion for a diverse faculty and student body. The professor of arts and religion will teach a required course in the M.Div. curriculum and three elective courses for M.Div., M.A., M.T.S., and Ph.D. students at the Graduate Theological Union, publish creative and recognized scholarship in the history of religious art with a special emphasis on theological reflection and the relation of the arts to church ministries. The successful candidate is expected to be a Core Doctoral Faculty member at the Graduate Theological Union. Areas of specialization may be in art history, theological studies, or media and performance studies. Rank is open.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:
• Seek opportunities for the development of creative teaching, including the use of newer technologies
• Develop curricula and teach in interdisciplinary collaboration with other faculty colleagues
• Advise M.Div., M.T.S., D.Min. and Graduate Theological Union M.A. and Ph.D. students
• Work with faculty colleagues to shape the vision and goals of the seminary
• Participate in PSR community life as a member of the faculty involved in teaching, scholarship, student advising and community service
• Carry out the responsibilities listed in the Faculty Manual. These include research, advising, committee work, attending meetings, community events and public relations activities

Executive Director of PANA (Institute for Leadership Development and Study of Pacific Asian North American Religion) and Faculty

The Executive Director of PANA will provide administrative oversight of the Center at Pacific School of Religion. The Executive Director will also serve as a faculty member providing educational and intellectual leadership in an open discipline or area of study. As a faculty member, the Executive Director will carry a half time teaching load which is two three credit courses during the academic year, publish creative and recognized scholarship, and is expected to become a Core Doctoral Faculty member at the Graduate Theological Union (GTU). Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

As Executive Director of PANA -
Function as the Chief Executive Officer of the Institute. The position includes but is not limited to the following functions:

• Responsible for the vision, growth, and sustainability of the Institute
• Hire, train and supervise Institute staff, creating and fostering a team attitude
• Primary liaison to PSR and GTU faculty, PSR administration and Board of Trustees
• As the primary external “face” of the Institute, responsible for speaking publicly, working with the media, and working with other organizations (e.g., denominational advocacy groups, etc.)
• Cultivate relationships with other API faith communities, academic institutions and centers
• Support PANA’s current fund-raising programs and build up PANA’s endowment, with ultimately responsibility for major donor cultivation and fund-raising “asks”
• Ultimate approval of all reports, budgets, grant requests, news bulletins, etc.
• Responsible for the fiscal planning of the Institute with staff and PSR administrators
• Be accountable to the PANA Oversight Committee in terms of program direction and development endeavors

As PSR Faculty Member -
• Carry out the responsibilities listed in the Faculty Manual
• Participate in PSR community life as a member of the faculty involved in teaching, scholarship, student advising and community service
• Advise M.Div., MTS, D.Min. and GTU M.A. and Ph.D. students
• Share with other faculty in the committee work of the school and the GTU

Faculty in Field Education and Leadership Development

This Faculty position provides educational and intellectual leadership in Field Education and Leadership Development for a diverse faculty and student body. The faculty person in Field Education/Leadership Development will lead a small group Field Education year-long seminar, teach the required Leadership course for M.Div. students, and one elective during the academic year. The successful candidate will be expected to publish creative and recognized scholarship. Rank is open.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities:

• Carry out the responsibilities listed in the Faculty Manual
• Develop praxis based Field Education programs and resources that call for critical theological reflection, contextual analysis, leadership assessment/evaluation and accountability to communities
• Cultivate field education mentors and sites
• Teach theory and practice of mentoring to field mentors and field based committees (9 to 11 seminars per year)
• Oversee recruitment and teaching of Field Education adjunct faculty
• Supervise Associate Field Education Director and staff
• Develop and oversee Field Education budget
• Advise M.Div. students in areas of vocational/field education
• Attend monthly Graduate Theological Union (GTU) Field Education (FE) Directors meetings/coordination of GTU FE events
• Serve as consultant and mediator for sites, mentors and students when necessary
• Consult with the faculty on the development of the Senior Integrative Seminar and the D.Min. Seminar
• Participate in PSR community life as a member of the faculty involved in teaching, scholarship, student advising and community service

Staff Positions

Director of Continuing and Community Education

Exempt, full-time (37 hours/week), regular staff. PSR strives to provide multi-faceted community and continuing education programs that serve religious and secular leaders around the world and enable progressive Christianity to have a greater voice in churches and the public arena. The Director of Continuing and Community Education assists in these efforts by working in conjunction with the Academic Dean to help coordinate the development and direction of a variety of continuing and community education contexts which are provided through various PSR centers and programs; researching other national and international continuing and community education programs; and providing principal coordination for the Earl Lectures/Pastoral Conference and PSR’s Summer Session.

Essential Duties and Responsibilities

• Working in conjunction with the Academic Dean, helps coordinate and plan the development and direction of a variety of continuing and community education efforts (including educational programs and events sponsored by Certificate for Ministry Studies, Center for Lesbian and Gay Studies in Religion and Ministry, Institute for Leadership Development and Study of Pacific and Asian North American Religion, Swedenborgian House of Studies, etc.

• Initial planning for the development of PSR’s continuing and community education efforts in consultation with the Academic Dean

• Researching national and international continuing and community education programs to provide new ideas for the direction and development of PSR’s programs

• Assessing and analyzing enrollment trends, customer/student demographics, and education/training needs of PSR’s continuing education community

• Providing direction and principal planning and coordination for the annual Earl Lectures and Pastoral Conference, including:

     1) Convening and participating with the Earl Lectures and Worship Committees and others to shape the concept of the lectures and conference

     2) Coordinating all aspects (ie: lining up main lecturers and workshop leaders/denominational lunches, etc.) of the event

     3) Supervising staff and volunteers, and working closely with vendors, lecturers and workshop leaders to implement the event

     4) Providing written assessment and summary after event to record attendance and program execution and recommend improvements for future Earl lectures/Pastoral Conferences

• Providing principal planning, direction and coordination for PSR’s Summer Session

     1) Securing faculty and issuing contracts

     2) Overseeing registration processes

     3) Developing marketing material and publicity for Summer Session in collaboration with the Director of Marketing and Communications

     4) Supervising part-time, student and temporary staff

     5) Providing written assessment and summary after Summer Session to record attendance and program execution and recommend improvements

• Exploring online delivery systems for distance learning programs

• Assisting the Foundation Relations Director in grant proposals for specific program elements

• Developing the continuing and community education pages of PSR’s new website in coordination with the Director of Marketing and Communication

Student Jobs

Banquet Food Server - On-Call

> Set up dinning and buffet tables as needed. This includes moving and arranging chairs and
tables and setting up, etc.
> Serve food and drinks and cut and serve food at buffet tables
> Clear tables
> Assist Chef in preparation of food setup and garnishment of tables
> Assist dishwasher with cleanup, including putting away leftovers, sweeping, mopping, and
taking out the garbage and recycling

Office Assistant in Academic Dean's Office

General office assistance including data-entry, filing, compiling mailings and lists, processing requests for transcripts, processing course evaluations, making phone calls, sending emails, assembling document packets, photocopying, shredding, receiving and responding to visitors, and additional duties as assigned.

CLGS - Student Administrative and Web Assistant

Assist with administrative and program support as necessary, including work on improving the Center’s website content.

PSR Earl Lecture & Pastoral Conference Event Coordinator

• Call planning meetings of staff, faculty and students to plan Earl Lecture & Pastoral Conference format and name speakers
• Maintain records of all Earl Lecture meetings
• Contact 20 to 30 UCC’s and other denominational organizations for suggestions on Earl Lecture & Pastoral Conference format
• Contact PSR Board Members for suggestions on speakers/preachers
• Develop the 2009 Earl Lecture & Pastoral Conference theme of “Radical Christianity: Bold and Daring Manifestations of the Gospel”
• Coordinate efforts with Director of Continuing and Community Education when he/she is hired

Personnel Office Assistant

The Office Assistant will provide general clerical assistance as needed. Responsibilities include:

> Maintaining adequate supply of employment paperwork packets & related employment paperwork in office
> Assisting employees in completing employment paperwork & following-up when paperwork
is incomplete
> Responding to requests for information, verbally and via email
> Assisting in providing information to the payroll clerk for bi-weekly payroll processing
> Assisting in creating, sending out and following-up on performance review forms
> Assisting in notifying staff/faculty/adjunct faculty for need to complete on-line preventing harassment training, and following-up when not completed in timely fashion
> Filing & shredding
> Posting and maintaining job opportunities on the PSR website and Job Ops bulletin board
> Occasionally answering phone
> Assisting with special projects as needed
