Continuing Education Units (CEUs)

About CEUs

The Continuing Education Unit (CEU) is a uniform unit that measures individual participation in noncredit continuing education. Much like academic credits, CEUs are awarded for participation in certain kinds of educational activities.

The benefit of CEUs is that they allow individuals to record their participation in continuing education activities regardless of where those units are undertaken (in public or private settings) or for what purpose they are intended (use by individuals, institutions, organizations, governmental bodies, or something else entirely).

Furthermore, CEUs can be used to measure non-credit continuing education without regard to age of participants, subject matter, program format, or instructional methodology, which allows individuals who desire additional educational experiences to look to many sources of continuing education and to select from many formats common to the field, while accumulating a uniform record available for future reference.

How Can CEUs be Used?

People choose to take courses for CEUs for a variety of reasons. Among the most common are:

  • Maintenance or improvement of professional competencies
  • Documentation of continuing qualifications for licensure, certification or registration
  • Evidence of personal and vocational growth and adjustment to meet changing career demands
  • Preparation for a new career
  • Demonstration of a conscious and persistent effort toward personal development

CEUs at PSR

PSR offers CEUs to participants in many of its programs, including Theological Education for Leadership (TEL), Summer Session and January Intersession, as well as to participants in various special opportunties. In addition, graduate level courses may be taken for CEUs, with faculty permission.

One CEU at PSR represents ten (10) contact hours between student and teacher/event.

California Board of Behaviorial Sciences (BBS)

PSR CE offerings meet the qualifications for continuing education credit for MFTs, LPCCs, LEPs and/or LCSWs as required by the California Board of Behavioral Sciences. Accredited schools (such as PSR) are authorized by BBS to provide continuing education and are not required to have a continuing education provider number.

Proof of Participation

Pacific School of Religion’s Department of Community and Continuing Education (CCE) assumes administrative responsibility for approval and record-keeping of CEUs. As part of this record-keeping, PSR provides participants with proof that they have received CEUs for appropriate educational activities in the form of a certificate of completion.

Students needing further verification may request a transcript through PSR's transcript request process.
